If you are concerned with your appearance and delaying signs of aging, there’s no doubt that skincare is already a part of your daily routine. However, you may be surprised some of the supposed “conventional wisdom” about skincare is misinformed and can even be counterproductive. In the most information-packed episode of The Doc Dudes Podcast yet, the plastic surgeons at Graper Harper Cosmetic Surgery have a conversation with Robert (Bob) Manzo, the founder and CEO of Skinprint®. After all, who knows more about skincare than a cosmetic chemist with 15 international patents in his field?

What You Should Know About Your Skin

It’s easy to forget that your skin is a living organ. Good-looking skin is usually synonymous with healthy skin, so how well you take care of your skin can significantly impact your appearance. The top layer of your skin is a membrane that regulates how much water exits your body and what toxins enter your body. This is called a “barrier function.” Damage to your skin, be it through exposure to smoke, sun, or chlorine, can gradually degrade the quality of your barrier function, leaving your skin more susceptible to problems — cosmetic and otherwise.

Skin Tips from the Cosmetic Chemist

Throughout the podcast, Bob drops many nuggets of wisdom, including:

  • More is not better when it comes to washing your face. Excessive washing breaks down the barrier function. Try to wash your face twice daily, and resist using hot water since that is worse for your skin.
  • Your skin does not need to feel “smooth and soft” after cleansing — however, many products advertise that, since consumers believe that is best. In reality, healthy skin that has just been cleansed feels more like plastic.
  • Because your skin type is unique, even the priciest and best-reviewed products may not be helpful for you. You are better off consulting with a doctor/expert who can analyze your skin and recommend products accordingly.
  • Don’t use a mister (water spray) to try to hydrate your skin. This triggers evaporation off your face, which dries out your skin more quickly.
  • Exfoliating is helpful, but not on a daily basis. Twice a week is sufficient.
