As one of Charlotte’s most prominent media personalities, Barbara McKay is no stranger to being in the public eye. This long-time television and radio host acknowledges, “This is an industry where they expect you to look the best you can for the age you are.” In the latest episode of The Doc Dudes podcast, Dr. Garrett Harper, Dr. Robert Graper, and Dr. Evon Zoog speak with Barbara about her decision to have facial plastic surgery — as well as her decision to discuss it with others.

Why Barbara McKay Chose Dr. Graper

Barbara was familiar with Dr. Graper’s strong reputation in the Charlotte community. During her consultation with Dr. Graper, she became confident he was the right surgeon for her, impressed by his high standards and openness in discussing all aspects of surgery. After seeing his before-and-after photos and a computer simulation of what her face would look like, she was ready to schedule her surgery as soon as possible.

Barbara is thrilled with her results because she looks refreshed, and Dr. Graper’s techniques allowed her to maintain a natural appearance. She credits some of her ongoing professional success to the way her cosmetic enhancements make her feel. The Doc Dudes agree with her that when you look good, you feel good… and when you feel good you do good!

Breaking the Stigma

This podcast is not the first time Barbara has discussed her venture into cosmetic surgery — in fact, she talks about it frequently in her interviews and in her book. Her openness on the subject means that many people from around Charlotte and across the country have asked her about her experience. She explains how it is a rewarding decision so long as you are doing it for yourself.

Graper Harper’s plastic surgeons acknowledge that the biggest fear of many patients is not the surgery itself but how other people will react to their cosmetic enhancements. The truth is that patients do not want the results of their surgery to be so subtle that their spouses or best friends can’t tell that there is a difference. However, they do want natural-looking results so that the new people they meet are not immediately saying, “I can tell this person had plastic surgery.” The goal is to have others comment on your refreshed, rejuvenated appearance. Many patients are often asked, “Have you been on vacation?”  Fortunately, this is an attainable goal when surgery is performed by a talented plastic surgeon.
