Plastic surgery is surrounded by misinformation. Social media trends, celebrity transformations, and clever marketing often make it difficult to know what is fact and what is fiction. During a new episode of The Doc Dudes, board-certified plastic surgeons Dr. Garrett Harper and Dr. Evon Zoog of Graper Harper Cosmetic Surgery continued their popular myth-busting series by addressing some of the most common misconceptions they hear during consultations.
Myth: Non-surgical treatments are always better
Injectables, laser treatments, and other non-surgical procedures can produce excellent results for the right candidate, but they are not direct replacements for surgery. Dr. Harper and Dr. Zoog explained that every treatment has limitations. Many patients benefit from non-surgical options that delay the need for surgery, while others eventually reach a point where surgery offers the most predictable and long-lasting improvement. The key is selecting the treatment that best matches the patient’s anatomy and goals.
Myth: Plastic surgery always leaves obvious scars
Modern plastic surgery places tremendous emphasis on incision placement and meticulous closure techniques. Incisions are carefully hidden within natural creases, hairlines, or other discreet locations whenever possible. While every surgical procedure creates a scar, proper surgical technique, postoperative scar care, and treatments such as laser therapy often help scars mature beautifully over time.
Myth: Recovery takes months
Recovery is often much more manageable than many patients expect. Dr. Harper noted that most patients can return to many normal daily activities within the first couple of weeks, although strenuous exercise is temporarily restricted while tissues heal. Full healing continues over several months, but most patients gradually resume their regular routines long before the final result is achieved.
Myth: Plastic surgery always looks fake
Today’s aesthetic philosophy focuses on natural-looking enhancement rather than dramatic overcorrection. Conservative surgical planning, individualized treatment plans, and advances in modern techniques allow surgeons to restore youthful contours while preserving each patient’s unique appearance. The goal is often for friends and family to notice that someone looks refreshed—not obviously surgical.
Myth: Liposuction is a weight-loss procedure
Liposuction is designed to sculpt and contour the body, not serve as a substitute for weight loss. Patients typically achieve the best results when they are already close to their goal weight and want to address stubborn pockets of fat that have not responded to healthy eating and exercise. Setting realistic expectations is one of the most important parts of achieving a satisfying outcome.
