It is widely known that the physical effects of pregnancy, childbirth and nursing can deeply affect a mother’s self-image and confidence. Every day, Dr. Robert Graper and Dr. Garrett Harper, cosmetic surgeons in Charlotte, meet mothers that are bothered by flat, saggy breasts and abdominal “pooches” leftover from having children. We love helping these women recover their youthful pre-baby bodies and enjoy the confidence that comes with the transformations.
In this post, we want to talk about the mommy makeover, which combines procedures to address the physical effects of pregnancy and nursing.
Abdominoplasty for a Flatter and Firmer Tummy
The first component of mommy makeover is typically tummy tuck surgery, which simultaneously addresses the following:
- Stretched-out, loose abdominal skin
- Separated or damaged abdominal muscles
- Excess fat deposits on the abdomen
- Stretch marks on the lower abdomen
Our plastic surgeons begin by making an incision on the lower abdomen, just above the pubic hairline. Through the incision, the plastic surgeon repairs abdominal muscles that stretched or separated during pregnancy. They can use liposuction techniques to reduce pockets of unwanted fat and narrow the waistline. Then, they trim loose skin on the lower abdomen and tighten the remaining skin, which may improve the appearance of stretch marks.
The result is a flatter, firmer abdominal profile and a narrower waistline. Stretch marks below the belly button are removed and those above are less visible. The lower tummy “pooches” are gone.
Breast Lift for Perkier, More Youthful-Looking Breasts
The second component of most mommy makeovers is breast lift surgery to elevate flat, sagging breasts higher on the chest. There are several types of lifts depending on how much needs to be done. If only the nipple is low, a small crescent of skin is removed above the areola to lift it to the proper position. If the entire breast is on the stomach with the nipple pointing down, then a more involved lift is needed with incisions around the nipple, nipple to the fold and then along the fold underneath. These incisions allow the breast to be put back on the chest, reshaped and the nipple centered. The incisions generally fade to white.
Some women opt to have breast implants placed at the time of breast lift surgery. This is a good option for mothers that are bothered by a loss of breast volume after nursing.
